A REALLY Super Sunday

Good luck to both the Colts and Saints this weekend. I think I'll be pulling for the Saints, with all that city has been through. The Colts are easy to like as well, which means a completely relaxing day of football-watching for me.

No offense, but last Sunday was super for me. My sons and I have taken to the rec basketball courts quite a few times in 2010. They put up with the old man's ailments -- chronic rolling left ankle, bad right knee, beginning of an arthritic left hip -- and I put up with their arguing ... with each other.

Last Sunday, we got in our first full-court game of the new year at the University of Iowa Fieldhouse. We squandered a lead in the game, and I had a couple of Romans 7:19 moments -- an unattractive word when the ball slipped through my hands on a rebound. And a stern, "Throw it here (at my chest) and not here (slightly over my head)," when my older son threw an errant pass.

By midweek I e-mailed both of them and said how much last Sunday meant to me, even though I fell short during the actual event. Hardly how Paul portrays fatherhood in 1 Thessalonians 2:

11For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

You fathers and mothers, encourage and comfort your kids, and guide them in the ways of Jesus ... even if they don't seem like they are listening. Especially after those times when you are not the greatest example! And have a SUPER weekend.
