Paul Would be Watching the Big Game

It's not hard to see from his writings that the Apostle Paul was a sports fan. Sports was a huge part of Greek and Roman life at the time; after all, the Ancient Olympic Games date back to 776 BC. So Paul's exposure to athletic contests made for some good, good writing!

We've already touched on a verse this week in Philippians 3:

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

How about I Corinthians 9:

24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Go to Hebrews 12:

1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

And I love Galatians 5:7:

7You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?

Who is cutting in on you today? The Blind Boys of Alabama sing it best in "Freedom Road":

"Ain't gonna let nobody turn me 'round."

Follow the sports fan, who followed the Son of God, and you won't be turned 'round, either.
